Not one, but two bosses!

Trolls

Tortos

…you know, I’m sure I’ve used that one before.

So, the troll council and Tortos (eventually) fall before us, putting us back at 7th on the server. Megaera was also poked tentatively, and she shouldn’t be far behind.

In order to kill the trolls, we followed the tactic of killing Sul first. With quicksand and sandstorm out of the way, the fight becomes incredibly easy. Definitely the most frontloaded fight in terms of damage and complexity that we’ve seen in a while, and possibly the most frontloaded full stop (Halfus springs to mind as a contender).

Tortos brought back post traumatic stress-like symptoms of our forays into the Firelands, and the turtle trash. Unfortunately this time they were brought into the encounter without the intervention of a certain pantless Death Knight, so we just had to handle it. For any guilds struggling on Tortos, we found that after the first couple of sets of Whirl Turtles, we could kick superfluous shells through the bats to get more damage on them and the boss itself. The soft enrage almost got us, and in typical fashion we killed him just before Squeaks died to his cauterize tick. Took us 28 pulls, for those of you still working on him.

Now, onto Megaera and Ji’kun. If we get past the Gastropodes.

So with the Sha of Fear in a state as close to dead as a basic emotional response can be, we set our sights back on the Vaults. I was sure we’d already plundered the place dry, but it turns out that someone not only replaced the traps, they upgraded them too. Oh well; I’m sure we can find some more bagspace…

A little late, this one, but the Will of the Emperor lies broken, its warranty void and its loot in our pockets. Go us! Turns out that the fight was a fairly simple endurance fight, so if anyone is looking for advice on how to do the fight, here it is:

  • Pop cooldowns early so that they reset towards the end of the fight.
  • However, leave heroism until the second or third Titan Gas phase, depending on how high your dps is

Man of the match goes to Gink, because Mana Tide is awesome <3

So that ends our tour of the vaults; not too difficult, all said and done; we look forward to coming back on heroic to see how easy it is to kick in the teeth then.

Oh, and then we cleared out the Heart of Fear as well.

So, a bit of old news: Garajal and the Spirit Kings went down a couple of weeks ago, right after the first two bosses. Quite easy, especially compared to our first stumbles onto the Stone Guard (who turned out to not be as much of a pushover as Morchok was).

The bigger news is Elegon:

Who we gave a good old fashionned kicking over on Tuesday. Well done everyone!

For anyone reading these updates, we got him after a couple more hours of tries, putting us at about 25-30 wipes for the kill. We got 6 stacks in the first spark phase and 4 in the second, leaving us at a nice round +100% damage for the final burn phase. We disenchanted the loot.

Will of the Emperor is an endurance/concentration fight, so expect another update after this week’s raiding.

Those line-ups are a thing of indescribable beauty. Roll on the next four!

In a fit of grave embaressment, I also regret to note that Feng was our first boss kill since heroic Lich King where I ended the fight alive. Truly, the end of times is upon us.

So, that’s that done. We are now, apparently, the 11th best guild on the server. Go us!

I thought that this time, rather than go through the comedy of errors that is the Wei Wu Wei lineup challenge, I’d post a kill shot with a bit more significance: the playing area immediately after the kill. Fun trivia fact: I have finished every single first kill in Cataclysm dead, having killed myself for the last 15 seconds of free healing.

Also, please let the record show that, for this pull, our main tank Kerrimar had a rabbit-related disconnect at the start of phase 2, so we powered through with many panicked cries, heroism and DPS tanking the bigger elementals.

The Team (in Role – Alphabetical Order):

T: Kerrimar
H: Evalynn
H: Glorim
H: Lan
D: Adetsa
D: Dreyk
D: Grend
D: Squeaks
D: Vaylie
D: Zaedria

Now to finish up extracting some mounts/titles from the older stuff. See you all in Mists!

Well, Mists of Pandaria is now screaming toward us with all the ponderous inevitability of an oncoming freight train, and that means brushing off the old kit, polishing the staff (hurr) and mending the holes in my robes for another foray out of a capital city and into the wild unknown. Apparently, my Dwarven senility has progressed to the point where I have forgotten how to use a wand and staff at the same time.

No matter.

This also means it’s time for another round of Dungeons and Raids! Due to the… slow… rate of content production from Blizzard over this past year, we’re in need of a couple of raiders to fill out the team. So, if you’re interested in a friendly, close-knit guild who like to smack assorted pandas, bug-people and manifestations of primal dread as much as you do, look no further! More information on who we are and what we do  can be found on the main forums in the Recruitment section (just click the link in the top left of your screen now!)

Currently, we’re looking for a couple of DPS – ranged for preference – and probably a spare tank, just in case. Exceptional applications are always welcome, and the ability to stand still in a line for kill shots is a definite bonus.

Thanks for having a look around, and welcome (back)!

Ruminations of a Holy Priest – The World (of Warcraft) Turns

[rumination]

Perhaps I left it a bit too long to update again. I guess we need another catch up session.

So, in terms of raiding progress, Ragnaros went down shortly after Staghelm did; turns out he’s not too hard if you don’t stand in the fire. Much loot was had by all, and then we went off to hit the heroic modes…

…aaaand did a little less well. Co-ordination failed a bit there. Still,by the end of the patch we went 6/8 heroic, leaving Beth’tilac and Raggy himself to flounder around until we have the time to come back and give them a good kicking.

We still can’t line up for  a kill shot.

Yup, this is a better attempt.

So, anyway, with that done and dusted, we move on to bigger, better, more dragon-shaped business within Dragon Soul. Which, to be fair to it, is a heck of a lot more interesting than Firelands was. There’s more variety of oddball tactics you need to use in order to win, the storyline is there (I do love the scripting, even though the fact that the Aspects are outclassed by ten random spods annoys me a little) and the loot is good.

That’s right folks, we have once again reached the point in the expansion where Blizzard have decided to give us all of the loot we could possibly choke on. I myself am now up to 6 characters able to make forays into LFR (another great feature – rage quitting a raid never felt so easily achievable!)

Importantly though, that means I have 6 characters to perform Transmogrification on. The fact that WoW has been essentially reduced to a big game of dress-up should make me feel more ashamed than I am, but so help me if I havent planned a full wardrobe for all my specs on all my characters already. Well played, Blizzard; I suspect that the old dungeons and raids will get quite a bit more traffic now. A quiet tip for all you amateur stock brokers out there – get some shares in Atlas Loot.

Dragonsoul progress has been rapid considering our performance on the previous two tiers of content; we’re currently 6/8. That would’ve been 7/8 but unfortunately our pets like attacking tentacles. Perhaps it’s an inbuild tendancy to OCD and they can’t leave just one up, or perhaps they have a malign intent. Either way, that last corruption kept going down.

Perhaps it didnt help that our entire tactics briefing went along the lines of “Don’t forget, pressing escape skips the cutscene. Kill some stuff, no, not that stuff.” There may also have been something about AoE-ing the adds down. I think it came up once or twice, anyway. Remember – knowing what you are meant to be doing before you do it is a massive increase to DPS, HPS and Tanking ability; it should be encouraged and fostered at every opportunity (note to self: perhaps publish a tactics blog on occasion to highlight crucial breakthroughs in our learning process, for the benefit of all. Or, at least, the benefit of my own insufferable smugness.)

Speaking of blogs, and by extension the guild, expect to see a few changes over the next couple of weeks or so. Due to a sadly unavoidable epidemic of Star Wars (which I’m told there’s a cream for), we’ve been reduced to what I’d call “low numbers”. Part of this means we’ve had to have a bit of a shake up – yours truly is now the illustrious guild master of this fine ship, and also its raid leader. Methinks Lu will continue to log on until Deathwing himself is forced to kick a very large, maelstrom-sized bucket, and then he’s off to make swooshy lightsabre sounds at mollified wookies.

That means we have a slightly different line up of officers for your perusal – Akai, Zaedria and Immortis are new to the team, whilst our resident pantsless Death Knight Aldrac returns to complete our quartet of questing quixotes. Look out for blogs from them (and more from myself) in the near future.

And Finally

Well, with all these changes, we’re going to need more people. Wei Wu Wei is therefore recruiting indiscriminately! I say indescriminately, but I mean we’d ideally like you to have most, if not all, of the following qualities:

  • You have Mumble
  • You have a sensible approach to your gearing choices, whether you look it up, ask Some Guy or crunch the numbers yourself. Please note that we have no stance on what your gear actually looks like, as long as it doesn’t give our more delicate members nightmares (ask Immortis about his tanking gear).
  • You have an up to date version of Deadly Boss Mods (found by typing Deadly Boss Mods into that search bar up there).
  • You can raid on Tuesdays and Thursdays, between 20.00 server and 23.30 server.
  • You don’t mind a more relaxed stance to raid nights – we are very much about random natterings in mumble, funny stuff, and generally just pratting around having fun. The raiding is almost incidental, but everyone likes killing stuff and looting the corpse, right?

“But Glorim!” I hear you think, “If I chopped off my own leg and then ate it, would I still weigh the same?!”

Well, quiet you. I’m not here to answer your conundrums of philosophy – that’s Aldrac’s department – but I can tell you what we can offer you as a guild:

  • Two nights of progress raiding a week.
  • Friendly and experienced guidance on just about everything in the game from our heavily experienced members.
  • Free bank repairs up to 500 gold/day, and more on heavy wipe nights.
  • A relaxed, social and mature atmosphere in which to while away your time.
  • Almost-completely-free enchants, food, gems, consumables and gubbins from our very well stocked guild bank.
  • Opportunity to become a guild blogger and post your thoughts for literally tens of people to see!
  • A chance to experience the majesty of Aldrac in his roleplaying gear – not to be missed!

If you are interested, either get in touch with us in game, or follow that link up in the top left to our forums, register, and fill in the application form. If you’re not sure if our playstyle and/or general demeanour is quite your thing but you’d like to have a look, please get in touch – most of us cap valour on a few characters a week, and we’re more than happy for the company whilst we’re stumbling into precarious situations whilst looking for the gift shoppe in Dragonblight.

No, seriously, I’m sure it was around here somewhere…

Ruminations of a Discipline Priest – Catching Up

Category : Guild News, Raiding

[rumination]

Ragnaros Has A Giant Dong.

Sadly, we couldn't get Baleroc to pose. The killjoy.

But more on that later. The main point, of course, is that we appear to be on the up again. The story goes that, last Sunday, Aldrac ventured that we might fancy a Sarth 3D on 25-man mode. When the dust cleared, there were 7 of the main raid team stood on his corpse, and Dreyk – so a foray into Firelands seemed to be a good plan.

2 hours later, we’d cleared to Alysrazor via Baleroc, so all things considered we had a fair run of it there.  Of course, this reminded me of a fundamental problem we have with the raid team; on reflection, no matter how good we are at actually killing the bosses, Ragnaros will skate to work before we can manage to line up for a decent screenshot. Such is the price of hubris.

So then last night we had a full night of plugging away at Alysrazor; a particular problem boss for us. Indeed, we gave it a good two hours of wipe before an emergency player switch gave us the kill in two pulls. Alysrazor is a bit of an odd one, because we’re used to blaming the good people at Blizzard for making fights hard work on the melee; that kind of rings true here as well, but without the constant interrupting/killing power of Zaedria, Grend and Loshack we’d be up the creek without a paddle.

And that’s a creek that’s full of fire.

He still wants your Morrowgrain.

That aside, I reckon we have that  fight sorted now – look for a vast improvement in the near future. Which brings us neatly on to this guy.

Now lore considerations aside (I’ve really wanted to punch Fandral in the face for quite some time), I’ve been  looking forward to this fight. For anyone not in the know, Staghelm reacts to the way your raid is positionned – if you bunch up, he turns into an AoE spamming scorpion, whereas spreading out incites him into cat form, where he starts pouncing. Add into the mix that every three shapechanges he casts a special attack, and you have something that is very simple to learn, but theoretically quite hard to master. The idea is that if he stays in one form too long he starts casting too quickly to keep up with, so you have to force him to change form. Add in that his damage increases steadily through the fight and by the end you have a very frantic and seat-of-the-pants style encounter that requires some split second thinking and a bit of chutzpah (chutzpah is a vastly underused word).

From a priest perspective, Fandral is best done (like the vast majority of the fights in Firelands) from Holy. By using Sanctuary for scorpion phases and Serenity for cat phases you get a lot of use out of your chakra states with good timing. Don’t forget, blow your mana cooldowns early and often for best effect!

Considering the amount of time I spend in Holy these days (and traditionally too), I might rename the column.

We’d only killed Alys once before last night, so we’d only had a few pulls on Staghelm. We did bring him to 2%, so we were expecting the kill tonight. And we delivered! After a trial run where we got him to about 2% again, we decided to let his first form stack up to one hast buff higher than normal, and that did it. Massive congratulations to Zaedria, who is now the proud owner of a Flamescythe, and also to Ariane, who now has shoulders that don’t look rubbish.

Still bad at screenshots.

So, we had twenty minutes left at that point, and we decided to go and see what that Ragnaros chap was up to. Not much, as it turns out, he seems to be stuck in a hole. The trash leading up to him was actually quite fun – Blizzard has done a good job on the trash this time round, I reckon. Unfortunately, their art department is either peurile or a bit short sighted when it comes to floor design; it was pointed out to me that the way the carpet is laid makes it look like the Firelord has a massive stylised phallus at about crotch height, due to his elevation in the lava.

And now I get to look forward to telling someone to stand on the left testicle as part of the tactics brief. A big shout out goes to Squeaks, who was unanimously voted the guild bomb safety disposal officer. May a happy and productive life of stepping in lava await you!

That probably wraps things up for now. We are still recruiting, the forum button should be just up there in the top left of your screen – we’re taking any good apps, but we’d really quite like another healer and another tank.
